Fujikura 90S+ vs 90S: Which Fusion Splicer Should You Choose?

In the fibre-optic industry, Fujikura has long been known for producing some of the most reliable and technician-friendly fusion splicers on the market. Their 90-series splicers have been industry favourites for years — but today, only the Fujikura 90S+ remains in production.
The original 90S (non-Plus) model has been officially discontinued, with Fujikura transitioning fully to the enhanced 90S+.

While both models were nearly identical in operation and performance, the 90S+ incorporates a few subtle refinements that improve workflow efficiency without changing the core splicing experience.

Below is a clear breakdown of what sets the 90S+ apart, and why it has replaced the earlier 90S.

1. Design and Build Quality

The 90S+ retains the same rugged, ergonomic design that made the 90S a field favourite. It’s built for durability in demanding environments, with a stable work platform and intuitive layout.

The only notable physical changes are small enhancements to the clamp and sheath-clamp design. These refinements provide slightly smoother handling during repeated operations but do not alter the overall design philosophy.

2. Speed and Performance

Both the 90S and 90S+ deliver fast, consistent splice performance.
However, the 90S+ introduces:

  • Optimized heating algorithm

  • Faster sleeve shrinkage

These improvements shave a small amount of time off each cycle, which can make a measurable difference during high-volume splicing projects.

3. Automation and Smart Features

The 90S+ continues to use Fujikura’s well-established automation systems, including:

  • Active Fusion Control (AFC)

  • Active Blade Management (ABM)

These systems were already available in the original 90S, so functionality between the two is largely unchanged. The 90S+ simply represents the current standardized platform moving forward.

4. Compatibility and Accessories

The 90S+ is fully compatible with the same fibre holders, cleavers, and accessories used with the original 90S.
This means:

  • Existing toolkits remain usable

  • No changes to supporting equipment

  • Accessories and consumables remain interchangeable

Many 90S+ packages also include refreshed or upgraded accessory sets, depending on the distributor.

5. Price and Value

While the 90S+ is priced slightly higher than what the older model used to cost, the difference reflects:

  • Minor efficiency enhancements

  • Consolidation into Fujikura’s current support platform

  • Ongoing firmware and service support for the Plus model only

Since the 90S is discontinued, the 90S+ is the only model within this range that ensures long-term support.
